A Family Story That Spans Four Generations
Henry Colbeck founded the business in 1893 on Newcastle Quayside. What began as a family business with agricultural roots has grown into one of the UK’s most established independent suppliers to the fish and chip, takeaway, foodservice and food manufacturing sectors.
More than 130 years later, Henry Colbeck remains proudly family-owned and family-led. That continuity matters… It means decisions are made for the long term. It means relationships come before quick wins. And it means the values the business was built on — quality, service, reliability and trust, still shape the way they work today.
Helping Businesses for More Than 130 Years
The Colbeck story has passed through four generations of the same family. After Henry Colbeck founded the business, his son Robert Douglas Colbeck took the reins and guided the company through changing times.
The next generation followed with Bill Colbeck, Henry’s grandson, who remains part of the business as Chairman.
At 94, Bill still sits at the head of the table at board meetings and regularly visits customers.
A Modern Business
Today, the fourth generation continues the family legacy, with Douglas Colbeck, and his wife Georgina Colbeck, helping lead the business forward. Serving over 2,500 food businesses, supplying more than 1,200 SKUs, and operating a fleet of nearly 50 HGVs. Behind that scale is a modern, highly digitised operation built for the complex demands of food businesses today.
The Colbeck family continue to invest heavily in digital infrastructure, from online ordering and systems integration to stock management, customer communications and operational efficiency, helping the business deliver the speed, accuracy and reliability their customers depend on.
More Than Just A Supplier
Technology has never replaced the personal service Henry Colbeck is known for. It strengthens it. Alongside the digital systems, customers are supported by a dedicated team of around 20 telesales colleagues and 10 field Sales Managers, giving businesses direct access to real people who understand their area, their products and the pressures of running a busy food operation.
The history at Henry Colbeck is not just about how long they have been trading… It is about how they have continued to adapt. That is something they are incredibly proud of. Very few businesses can say they have served the same industry for more than a century while staying independent, family-owned and closely connected to the customers they support.
