National Vegetarian Week 2022

National Vegetarian Week which for 2022 runs from May the 16th till May the 22nd is a brilliant opportunity to celebrate all things vegetarian and for businesses like Henry Colbeck to show off our veggie and vegan products.

Give me a reason…

Amongst the many reasons to go vegetarian is for our wildlife! Globally wildlife is under risk owing to climate change, with some of the UK’s most familiar and well-loved species in danger of disappearing altogether. Eating vegetarian or eating vegetarian more often is one of the easiest ways we can all do a little bit to reduce our own carbon emissions. So why not join in with the thousands of others making the move to a more vegetarian and sustainable based diet.

As well as the positive effects on wildlife and climate a vegetarian diet can be great for your health. Public Health England says it is important to eat a diet low in saturated fat and high in whole grains, fresh fruit and vegetables. As a vegetarian, eating a balanced diet based on whole grains, pulses (beans and lentils), vegetables and fruits, nuts and seeds you should easily exceed the guidelines for eating 5-A-Day and your meals will be naturally high in fibre and low in saturated fat.

One of the biggest concerns people have about vegetarian nutrition is where vegetarians get nutrients that typically come from meat and fish, such as protein, iron, calcium, zinc, vitamin B12,  and essential fats like omega 3. In most cases these nutrients are naturally included in balanced vegetarian and vegan diets. It can however be useful to be aware of good nutritional sources.

The Vegetarian Society, a UK charity, are prompting people to SIGN UP and swap one meal or eat veggie for the whole week.
